Pack light — our porters carry the camp

On every AVENTRA trek our porters carry the tents, sleeping bags, mattresses, cooking gear, food and drinking water. You only carry a small daypack with your personal things, so it pays to pack smart. These are the 10 things we tell every trekker to bring.

1

Trekking shoes with good grip

The most important item. Choose shoes or boots you have already walked in — new shoes cause blisters. The summit trail is loose volcanic gravel, so good grip matters more than anything.

2

Warm jacket

A down or thick fleece jacket for the crater rim at night and the summit before sunrise, where it can be near 0 °C with wind.

3

Gloves and a beanie

Small, light, and they make the summit push far more comfortable. Your fingers get cold holding trekking poles in the wind.

4

Headlamp with spare batteries

Essential — the summit attack starts around 2:30 am in total darkness. A phone torch is not enough because you need both hands.

5

Rain jacket or windbreaker

Weather on the mountain changes fast. A light waterproof shell also blocks the wind at the top.

6

Daypack (20–30 L) with rain cover

Big enough for your layers, water, snacks and camera. Leave the rest of your luggage at your hotel or with us in Senaru.

7

Trekking poles

They save your knees on the long descent and help on the steep summit section. Ask us if you'd like to borrow a pair.

8

Sun protection

Sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat. The Sembalun savanna has almost no shade, and the sun is strong at altitude.

9

Personal medicine and blister plasters

Bring any medicine you take, plus plasters, painkillers and lip balm. Our guides carry a first-aid kit for emergencies.

10

Headtorch-friendly snacks and a power bank

A few of your favourite snacks for the summit push, and a power bank — there is no electricity on the mountain.
