Best Time to Climb Mount Rinjani: Month-by-Month Breakdown

Weather, crowds and park closures through the year — so you can pick the right month for your trek.

Mount Rinjani and Segara Anak crater lake

By the AVENTRA team in Senaru · 21 October 2026

The short answer

The best time to climb Mount Rinjani is during the dry season, from about April to October. The trails are open, rain is rare, and the views from the crater rim and summit are at their clearest. For the best balance of good weather and fewer people, we recommend May, June and September.

From around January to March the national park usually closes the trekking routes because of heavy rain, strong wind and landslide risk. In 2026, for example, the routes reopened on 1 April after the seasonal closure.

Month by month

January

Usually closed

Peak rainy season. The park normally closes the trails for safety and to let the forest recover.

February

Usually closed

Still the wettest time of year. Trekking routes are normally closed.

March

Usually closed

Rain starts to ease, but the trails usually stay closed until the official reopening.

April

Reopening

The park usually reopens around the start of the month. Everything is green, with some afternoon showers — check the exact reopening date before you book.

May

Great

Dry weather settles in, the hills are still green and the trails are quiet. One of our favourite months.

June

Great

Clear skies and good visibility. Busier towards the end of the month as the holidays start.

July

Peak season

Dry and sunny but the busiest month, and the coldest nights on the rim. Book early.

August

Peak season

Very busy and very cold at the summit before sunrise. Camps on the crater rim can be crowded.

September

Good – check rules

Fewer people and clear views. In very dry years the park may limit access to prevent forest fires — ask us for the latest status.

October

Good – check rules

Hot and dusty on the savanna, often the last dry month. Fire-prevention limits can still apply.

November

Weather dependent

The rains begin. Trails can be slippery and views more cloudy; treks run when conditions are safe.

December

Weather dependent

Wetter weather and possible closures, especially late in the month. Keep your plans flexible.

How cold does it get?

Days on the trail are warm, especially on the open Sembalun savanna. Nights at the crater rim (around 2,600 m) are cold, and the summit (3,726 m) can be close to 0 °C with strong wind before sunrise, especially in July and August. Bring a warm jacket, gloves and a beanie whatever month you come — see our packing list.

Closures can change

The Mount Rinjani National Park office decides when trails open and close, and the dates can change with the weather, volcanic activity, fire risk or ceremonies. Before you book flights, send us your dates on WhatsApp and we'll tell you the current status.
